LRGS is a successful state day and boarding school, with a vibrant Sixth Form of 350 students. As one of the top grammar schools in the country, our Sixth Form students consistently attain a high level of academic achievement.
Around three-quarters of our A-level results are at A*, A or B grade and almost all of our leavers go on to university, many of them to the most competitive institutions, including 10-12% to Oxford and Cambridge.
Our Results page gives a detailed breakdown of our most recent AS and A-level results by subject, and shows university destinations.
Our latest Ofsted inspection found that 'Attainment in the Sixth Form is well above that found nationally' and rated the school 'Outstanding' across all categories.
Joining the Sixth Form
Many of our students have been with us since Year 7, but every year we welcome about 50 new students, some as boarders, from schools in Lancashire, Cumbria and further afield, directly into the Sixth Form. See our Admissions page for further details of how to join.
As a state boarding school, education is free for all students and we also offer affordable weekly boarding at highly competitive rates. This is a popular option and a great preparation for university life.
Sixth Form Staff
The following staff are based in the Sixth Form Centre, to guide and support all of our Sixth Form students.
Sarah Haigh - Head of Sixth Form
Jamie Reynolds - Deputy Head of Sixth Form

"The students' personal development and well-being are outstanding, as is the care and guidance provided" (Ofsted)
Our team of Sixth Form tutors are there to help students cope with the step up from GCSE to A-level and give particular support to new students with their transition to LRGS. They are there to guide you throughout the university admissions process and, along with our independent careers adviser, will advise you on your best options for the future.
Wide choice of subjects
"Outstanding teaching" (Ofsted)
We offer a wide range of challenging A-level (and some Cambridge Pre-U) courses, from Art and Philosophy to Further Maths and Economics and new for 2017; Computer Science.
Outside the classroom
"The range of extra-curricular activities is extremely impressive" (Ofsted)
From high level, competitive rugby, cricket, and cross country to drama, debating, music and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, we have a wide range of extra-curricular activities to suit all tastes. See our Activities and Sports pages.
Life at LRGS Sixth Form means working hard, but as you will see on the following pages, we have a lot of fun too.
Coeducational from 2019
Lancaster Royal Grammar School has taken the decision to admit Sixth Form girls in September 2019. Sixth Formers will benefit from the different approaches that boys and girls bring to the classroom, providing our students with the best preparation for life beyond school. There are no current plans to admit girls as boarders.
