Sixth Form Boarding Scholarship

Lancaster Royal Grammar School invites applications for Sixth Form boarding scholarships which will be awarded for academic or extra-curricular excellence.

These new boarding scholarships are open to internal students progressing from Year 11 to the Sixth Form and to external students applying for Lower Sixth entry in September 2020.

Up to three scholarships will be awarded for September 2020.  Each scholarship has a value of £1500 per year (£500 per term) in fee reduction, and the scholarship will apply for both the Lower and Upper Sixth years subject to satisfactory sustained performance.

We are looking for students who excel academically or in an extra-curricular activity and who show promise as leaders amongst their peers.  Boarding scholars will hold high personal standards of conduct and motivation.  They will serve as excellent role models in both the LRGS boarding community and the wider school.

Academic scholarships

Academic excellence and intellectual curiosity are at the core of all that happens at Lancaster Royal Grammar School.

We encourage applications from students who are predicted to achieve eight or more GCSEs at grade 8 or 9, and who have high academic ambitions for the Sixth Form and beyond.  Applicants may have shown particular ability in specific subject areas or they may have a broad range of academic interests.  They need to be able to demonstrate a high commitment to their studies, and a willingness to contribute to the academic life of the Sixth Form and the wider school community.

Criteria for application:

Candidates will be expected to achieve at least eight GCSEs at grade 8 or 9, and to have high academic ambitions for the Sixth Form and beyond.  Applicants may have shown particular ability in specific subject areas or they may have a broad range of academic interests.  They need to be able to demonstrate a high commitment to their studies, and a willingness to contribute to the academic life of the Sixth Form and the wider school community.

Internal applicants do not need to complete the online application form. Your Form Teacher will give you an application form to complete and return by 18 December 2019. You must also include a letter (maximum 400 words) outlining your academic interests, achievements and ambitions.  Tell us how you hope to contribute to the academic life of LRGS in the Sixth Form.

External applicants should complete the online Sixth Form application form and indicate that you wish to apply for a Boarding Scholarship.  Once you have submitted your application, please email Mrs Emma Jones the following information:

  • A copy of your latest school report
  • Your predicted GCSE grades for all subjects in a school document or on school headed paper

Extra-curricular scholarships

Extra-curricular excellence and opportunity play a central part in the life of Lancaster Royal Grammar School.

We welcome applicants who are already excelling in an area of extra-curricular activity such as Sport, Music, Drama, or Art and Design.  Scholars will contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school community and will be expected to represent the school in fixtures, competitions, productions, exhibitions or performances relevant to their award.

Criteria for application:

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a record of significant achievement in their chosen field, and to have high ambitions in that area for the Sixth Form and beyond.

In Music, this might mean that an applicant is working towards Grade 8 in their main instrument having passed Grade 7 with Merit or Distinction.  A second instrument will be looked on favourably but is not essential.

In Sport, we would expect a Scholar to be competing regularly at County level or above with realistic ambitions to progress further in their chosen sport.  Achievement across a range of sports will be welcomed but is not essential.

A Drama scholar would need to show a sustained pattern of achievement in performances and productions, whether through acting, directing or writing, possibly alongside Speech and Drama qualifications.

In Art and Design, an applicant should be able to show significant success in their creative work both within and beyond the school curriculum.  They may assemble a portfolio to show evidence of their skills.

Although not essential, it is likely that they intend to study an A-level subject relevant to their scholarship, such as Physical Education, Music, Theatre Studies, Art, Photography, or Design and Technology.

Applicants also need to be able to demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the life of the Sixth Form and the wider school community.

They must also show their potential to meet the Sixth Form academic entry criteria which are a minimum of six grade 6s at GCSE including grade 5 or above in Maths and English Language.

Boarding scholarship interviews

Candidates will be invited to a scholarship assessment interview which will take place in February 2020 with the Headmaster, the Head of Boarding and the Head of Sixth Form.  We will inform candidates of the outcome of their scholarship application by Monday 2nd March.

Award and tenure of scholarships

The award of scholarships is at the discretion of the scholarship panel, which comprises the Head, the Head of Boarding and the Head of Sixth Form.  Decisions will be based on the full range of evidence provided by the application form, supporting documentation, references and interview.

A review of a scholar’s performance, commitment and conduct may take place at any time during the tenure of the scholarship to ensure sustained contribution and progress.  A scholarship may be withdrawn if this review is unsatisfactory.

Subject to the above review, the tenure of the scholarship is expected to run for the two years of Sixth Form education.
