Supporting the School

John Gardyner’s endowment in 1472 stated that the School was “to educate boys in grammar, freely”.  His intentions still resonate today.  Education at LRGS remains free.  Our excellent InspirUS outreach programme, Lune Scholarship Fund and Opportunities Fund are just three ways in which we remain true to John Gardyner’s aim and help us to educate pupils irrespective of background or income.   All three schemes are funded entirely through the generosity of others - by donations from former pupils, parents, staff and friends of the School.

Also thanks to your generosity we have been able to renovate many areas of the School into attractive teaching and study areas for our students.  A new science lab has been created by converting two small lecture rooms into a spacious, airy lab to accommodate the growing number of 6th form students. This has been made possible by a generous grant from the Wolfson Foundation, a bequest from a former member of staff and a donation from a former pupil.

Another much needed space for the pastoral team in Wyresdale House has been created through generous donations made in memory of former teacher, Richard Furlong Brown. In addition to the new room, a memorial bench will be placed outside Ashton House and a maths prize named in his honour.

Planning for our next phase of development is under way linking in with 550 years since John Gardyner's benefaction to the School.  We have identified three strands to our plan:

  1. Outreach and access – changing children’s lives
  2. Health and well being – promoting mental and physical health
  3. Inspiring sports facilities – high quality indoor and outdoor spaces

Working with the Governors, Head and our Campaign Board, we are creating an ambitious and exciting plan that will be our foundation for the next 550 years.

Thank you so much to everyone who is supporting the School by donating to the various projects in our Development Programme.   We are amazed by the generosity that we receive.
