The geologist John Wesley Powell was a pioneer of the American West and led the first expedition down the Colorado River.

Powell recorded this famous passage in his diary for August 13th 1869 as he prepared to enter the Grand Canyon itself, facing the ultimate whitewater adventure: 

“We are now ready to start on our way down the Great Unknown. Our boats are tossed by the fretful river. We have but a month’s rations remaining. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknown river to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we known not. Ah, well! we may conjecture many things.”

September at LRGS may be new and exciting, but it certainly is not the Great Unknown! 

Form tutors and boarding staff are here to help, along with the whole extended pastoral team – Heads of Year, trained prefects, teachers, the learning support department, school Nurse and others. 

We have looked after generations of pupils, and we will guide them safely through the rapids.
