Inspectors wrote: “Children in boarding thrive both academically and socially. Boarding contributes positively to their attainment.” 

Dr Chris Pyle, Head of Lancaster Royal Grammar School, said, “State boarding at LRGS is very special indeed.  We are delighted to receive this exceptional report which shows that the very highest standards of care are maintained across all parts of boarding. 

“The report highlights the care and professionalism of our boarding staff.  Their commitment and expertise are truly exceptional.  They are the reason that our vibrant community of boarders does brilliantly, both in an out of the classroom. 

“The focus of the inspection is rightly on the pastoral care and personal development of young people in boarding.  Our boarders also excel academically, and it is excellent that inspectors also recognised the academic benefits of the boarding environment.”

Lancaster Royal Grammar School is one of about 30 state boarding schools in England.  It offers modern flexible boarding for 120 pupils from age 11 to 18, including girls in the Sixth Form.  Boarders come from across the UK, while about a quarter are international boarders from Hong Kong, the Caribbean, west Africa and elsewhere. 

This routine no-notice inspection took place in June.  The report praised a wide range of areas of strength at Lancaster Royal Grammar School.  The school’s boarding provision received Outstanding grades for Overall experiences and progress of children, How well children and young people are helped and protected, and the Effectiveness of leaders and managers. 

Inspectors found that children build strong friendships and enjoy boarding.  They experience a strong sense of belonging, and are valued and respected in all their diversity.  Pupils have numerous opportunities and activities in boarding at LRGS. 

The report also showed that boarding staff know the children exceptionally well, and also manage pupils’ behaviour exceptionally well.  Safeguarding is central to all aspects of practice.  Staff work closely with parents.  Children receive high-quality support that positively promotes their wellbeing. One parent reflected this strength, stating, ‘The support for mental health is exceptional. They are amazing.’
