U15 Lancashire Cup Final – Match Report
LRGS U15 rounded off the 2016-17 season with a victory in the Lancashire Cup Final over St Edwards College Liverpool at Fylde Rugby Club on Sunday 19th March. This was the third year running that LRGS U15 have reached the final of the competition winning one and losing last year against the same opponent by 1 point.
It looked to be a cold and windy day which would have suited St. Edwards style of play however the weather cleared up just in time for the start of the game. LRGS kicked off first and scored an early try through Nat Archer after a good lineout drive and offload from Jonny Evans. St Edwards returned with a period of heavy pressure which resulted in an unconverted try.
The rest of the first half was dominated by St. Edwards however they couldn't break down the LRGS defence and the score at half time stayed at 7-5. As soon as the second half began LRGS were back on the front foot and good play from both forwards and backs allowed Curtis Liddle to dive in for a trademark try, which Patrick Bishop again converted.
LRGS again held off St. Edwards and after a number of phases Dan Cooper got the ball over the line making it 21-5. St. Edwards never gave up and came back with another unconverted try to come within 11 points with around 8 minutes to play. The momentum had changed sides and the Liverpool team came again and again with their forwards, to no avail, the LRGS tackling stayed strong. It was looking like they were going to score until Adam Hargreaves broke through the line and stepped the full back, a great individual try.
LRGS were not done yet and Patrick Bishop ran through for yet another try pushing the score out to 35-10 with not long to play. St. Edwards, to their credit carried on working hard and grabbed another consolation try, the game finished 35-17 to Lancaster.
LRGS U15 team have had a successful season, playing 13 and winning 9, also picking up first at Giggleswick sevens and runners up at King's Macclesfield sevens. The team move onto a tour of Argentina in the summer and another season of rugby. On behalf of the team I would like to thank Mr Stewart and Mr Hall for pushing us all year and improving our game massively.
