This year marks 550 years since the endowment of Lancaster Royal Grammar School by John Gardyner, Mayor of Lancaster, in 1472. To celebrate this momentous occasion we will be remembering our heritage and planning for the future.

John Gardyner dreamed of a school for Lancaster that would last forever – and his generosity matched his aim. In 1472, he left the profits from his watermill to support our school in perpetuity and began a tradition of philanthropy that has benefitted every generation of pupils.

As part of our 550 anniversary celebrations, a programme of lectures, known as the John Gardyner lectures has been devised. A number of distinguished OLs from a wide range of industries and backgrounds have been invited to speak to our Sixth Form students. The programme began on 14th January with an inspirational talk by Chris Alderson MBE. Chris very kindly shared some of his experiences and encouraged our Sixth Form pupils to look for and take advantage of every opportunity. "Success is based on an open mind and an ability to see opportunities" Chris also reminded our pupils that their story isn't yet written and that "life isn't a photo - it is more like a movie." He encouraged all of them to seek out opportunities and to not be afraid of failure. Huge thanks to Chris, his account of 29 years of travel and business in Asia was an inspiring and memorable start to our John Gardyner Lectures!

Other speakers include: David Baldwin, Sports Agent, Journalist Michael Taylor, comedian Jon Richardson and Nobel Prize winner Sir Peter Ratcliffe.

Various 550 themed events and reunions will take place throughout the year – in school and around the country and every pupil and member of staff will receive a commemorative badge to mark being a part of this exciting moment in LRGS history.
