Badminton teams give their best
Two LRGS badminton teams, U16 and U14, represented Lancaster as area champions in the Lancashire championships held in Thornton Cleveleys recently.
They had pool matches to play in order to go on to the knockout stages. At U13 level we played Cardinal Allen first and won 3-2. After that we had a very tight match against Alder Grange and lost the final game of doubles by one point to go down 2-3. We then had to face the strongest team in the group, St Christopher’s and although we had some very close doubles games, we were beaten 0 – 5. This put us third in the group and unable to qualify for the semi finals but the players felt as though they had given their best.
In the U16 group we actually lost the first match 1-4 against Carr Hill, once again with some very close game results. We found our feet against Fearns and came out winners 4-1. This set up a final group contest against St Christopher’s which we had to win. Unfortunately they were a little more tactically astute and although we took one game, they won the other four. This put us in the same position as the U13, third in the group and unable to qualify. The players were more critical of themselves at this level and we had come really close in some of the games but let the last few points drift away.
Overall it was a good learning experience and should lend itself to improving tactical initiative as well players wanting to improve their individual game.
