LRGS runners are northern champions
We were expecting a closely fought battle at the Northern Schools Cross Country Championship (the Roses Championship) at Woodbank Park, Stockport last weekend. LRGS runners were defending their title as 2010 Northern champions, which they won by just 7 points last year. In the end, we managed to not only retain the title, but won by over 100 points.
LRGS runners came first in four out of the five age groups. The Second Year team retained their team trophy and the Seniors became team champions for the first time in 17 years. By winning the team prize in their event, the First and Second Year teams gave LRGS its first team victory in both those races, which have been held since 1964 and 1960 respectively.
In addition to the four lead runners who counted for the team, the other six played their part, often finishing ahead of other teams' counters. LRGS had the maximum number allowed of 50 runners taking part.
Cross-country coach Andy Yelland said: “The boys gave each other tremendous support, cheering for their club mates all round the course. Also, as strong as ever was the support given by parents. Both made LRGS stand out as the leading cross-country school in the north. We were delighted to put on such a spectacular sporting display for our Headmaster Mr Jarman, who came to see the Northern Schools for the first time, and presented the trophies back to us! We hope to defend our title once again next year.”
