LRGS reach finals in Barbados
For many of the LRGS touring party, the Sir Garfield Sobers Cricket Tournament served as their last association with the school as a pupil and what an incredible way to bow out before joining the illustrious OL Club.
The Sir Garfield Sobers International Cricket Tournament provides a unique opportunity for schools to compete at an international level, not only facing the cream of the West Indian and English Schools, but also various age group teams from West Indian Islands. This emphasises the high calibre of the event and puts the LRGS achievement in perspective.
In previous trips, LRGS have not qualified from their group and made it into finals week. However, the class of 2011, led by captain Mark Walling, went where no LRGS team had gone before and reached the tournament final at the Kensington Oval (West Indies Test Match Ground).
En route to the final, the boys only lost one game which was to previous winners Combermere (Barbados) and it was to be the same team who came back in the final and once again proved too strong for LRGS. Nevertheless, the boys' achievements are a credit to all associated with LRGS cricket and coaches and players in particular should be very proud of their efforts.
