Success for rowers in York
LRGS rowers secured first and second positions when they took part in the York Small Boats Head recently.
Both J17 and J16 squads made the trip over the Pennines for the event, which is popular with LRGSBC crews and parents alike. Part of the group travelled the night before and stayed at York Youth Hostel. They enjoyed a walk through the historic city centre the night before to find a meal and were up and out of the Youth Hostel by 8am the next morning for the start of Division 1.
The weather was mild for the time of year and the conditions good. The two J17 double sculls as well as two single scullers were on the water by 9 o’clock and raced the 3000m course through the city centre. The whole event is run over three divisions which meant that overall results could not be calculated until the final race of the day. This can lead to crews in more favourable conditions beating faster crews who had raced in a different division.
By the time the single scullers had returned to St Peter’s boat house, the J17 4+ crew were on the water and ready to go. The crew was racing an age group higher than normal because of the inclusion of G Highley, a J17.
In the Third Division, LRGSBC entered the regular J17 4+, a J17 quad scull and an experimental Vet C double scull of JPJ and a parent, Mr Gray. Over the whole day, 339 crews raced over the course and through York, which made for a colourful sight for spectators and tourists alike.
It was worth waiting for the results at 5.30pm to pick up the winners' glass goblets.
