Cambridge blue for OL
Stuart Brown OL (2002-2009) gained a rugby blue recently when he played for Cambridge University in the annual match against Oxford University at Twickenham.
There have been many OL blues in cricket, soccer, boxing and athletics over the years, but Stuart is the first Oxbridge rugby blue from LRGS for 27 years. In a BBC radio interview after the game, Cambridge University captain Jimmy Richards singled out Stuart for praise, saying that he’d performed really well for a young 19-year-old prop.
Before joining LRGS, Stuart was a pupil of St Wilfrid’s C of E School, Halton; he also played for the Vale of Lune junior sides. Stuart grew up with a talented group of rugby friends and they enjoyed Lancashire Cup success at different age groups for both school and club, together with representation at Lancashire county level. He trained with the Vale of Lune first team squad over the summer months.
Stuart joins a select group of OL rugby blues, including Trevor Glover (Oxford 1974-5), John Taylor (Oxford (1974), Doug Walker and Steve Gill (Cambridge 1980-1), and Richard Bailey (Cambridge 1982-3). He is currently in his second year reading Land Economy, with a view to a career in commercial property investment or fund management.
