InspirUS 2
InspirUS 2 is taught by Mr Jim Calvert and is for primary children in year 5. We accommodate around 14 children per session, from 2 or 3 different schools. The children attend these after-school InspirUS sessions for 10 weeks.
We cover a range of different topics in our sessions; from learning about speed of light and our solar system, to focusing on one country, Japan, where we learn katakana and study authentic Japanese artefacts. InspirUS 2 is heavily science based; but there are still aspects from the entire Curriculum, and always something that each child will find interesting or inspiring.
An InspirUS Session: Outdoor Challenge
This is a really exciting session that all the children enjoy. It involves working in small teams to solve a series of challenges. Each challenge solved gives the team one letter towards a secret password. The challenges set are extremely demanding and involve the teams working well together, utilizing each person’s skills and knowledge. The teams are also required to navigate their way around the LRGS grounds using a map and compass. The different tasks include: Translating Japanese, Measuring ‘rocket fuel’, The Hula Hoop Challenge and Chopstick Challenge.
The Woodland Project
From September, InspirUS will be running a really exciting new project, based in the LRGS Woodland Site. During these sessions children will develop skills such as shelter construction, cooking on open fires and using tools to make wooden implements. They will investigate wildlife on the site and come to understand the uses of our local natural environments and how to enjoy them in a positive and creative way. The area will be trialled by InspirUS initially but it is hoped that every school in Lancaster could have access to this site if desired.
