Armchair Generals

Armchair Generals

“What is Armchair Generals?”

This is a question which I often hear from new boys when they see the long list of clubs and societies at LRGS. It stands out from the range of sports and music that the school offers, as it is something uniquely different. Armchair Generals conducts historical wargames and boardgames, which some people may instantly think would be boring. However, it is very enjoyable for those who love strategy games (perhaps those who want more of a challenge in conquering Europe that which can be posed by a computer?) or who are fascinated by history. It is not, however, a requirement to like history to enjoy Armchair Generals - the logistical challenges often occupy the minds of scientists, while others enjoy dominating a country (or indeed, the players) and betraying their friends!

Games vary from Medieval Times through to Modern African conflicts. You could be ruling over a country or a small band of men besieged by a force led by Napoleon.

We meet after school on Friday to play skirmishes and boardgames, with a favourite being Diplomacy (a simple but highly intricate game which involves in everyone falling out after being betrayed and invaded). We also meet for longer games in weekends during half-term, which could be part of a longer campaign.

So, if you are interested declaring a cavalry charge on your best friend or sending helicopters into a burning city to rescue an important politician, then Armchair Generals is for you. The society is open to all and can grant you control of an army, and is enjoyable and challenging. Please note that any power-crazy or paranoid traits that you may inherit from attendance are purely coincidental!
